Tree species classification
The first step to generation of a stock or single tree data base is the automatic classification of tree species, which is definitely one of the most ambitious plans in the context of sensor data processing. This firstly differs between forest area and non-forest area and then examines the forest areas for occurrence of different tree species via comparing diverse vegetation indications. The aim is to automatically find out the dominant tree species in North Rhine-Westphalia, like spruce, pine, buck, Douglas pine, oak and larch. First results have already been promising, but currently concentrate on tree species spruce, Douglas pine, larch as well as deciduous tree as tree species group.
